Ares Galaxy has long held station at the top of the roost as far as P2P filesharing software goes. It was the original version of Ares and, it seems, the one that everyone tried to copy and beat. Over the years Ares Galaxy became established as the best, and no contenders came anywhere close.
So it has taken so real improvements to overcome this inertia and to topple Ares Galaxy from the top spot. While some versions of Ares are still nothing more than poor imitations (and poor imitations bundled with adware in some cases: Ares Gold and Ares Destiny), there are some absolutely cracking versions of the software that, with the benefit of hindsight and the advantage of clever developers that knew how to capitalize on a good thing, have caught up with and overtaken the old market leader.
Ares Vista, Ares Ultra, and Ares Ultimate are the best of the modern versions, and I would definitely recommend giving any or all of these a whirl and seeing which one suits you best.
All versions of Ares (even the really bad ones!) run off the same Ares network, so there is no need to wonder whether your favorite music will be available on the network: if it was available with Ares Galaxy then it will be available with Ares Ultra, Ares Vista or Ares Ultimate.
