Meaning of Ares
The Ares filesharing software, designed to be used for free music downloads was developed from the middle of 2002 and originally operated on the Gnutella network. Its popularity meant that it could later start using its own network which ran on slightly different technology to that employed by Gnutella.
It may come as a shock to some of its users, but the Ares filesharing system did not make up its own name. Sorry!
The Ares name is also used by NASA scientists to describe one of their latest inventions: the cargo launch component of Project Constellation. This rocket will be able to carry 130 tons to low earth orbit and haul 65 tons to the Moon. The plan is to use this rocket when the Moon is revisited sometime in 2019.
The original use of this name was for a Greek God of war. While the history of this particularly malevolent God is beyond the scope of this article, suffice to say that nobody would dare steal his name if he actually existed!
